Our mission is to provide hope to those impacted by eating disorders.

To achieve this, we engage in professional development, advocacy, community engagement, education, awareness, service enhancement and training in the prevention and treatment of eating disorders.

Our History

The Waterloo-Wellington Eating Disorders Coalition (WWEDC) was formed in April 2015, an amalgamation of the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Eating Disorders Coalition and the Eating Disorders Awareness Coalition of Waterloo.

The coalition serves the Waterloo-Wellington community. The purpose of this coalition is to provide hope to people who are impacted by eating disorders. We engage with stakeholders across the eating disorders continuum, including people who have experienced eating disorders or disordered eating, loved ones of those with eating disorders or in recovery, eating disorder treatment providers, and those interested in learning more about eating disorders. We work to achieve our mission by engaging in advocacy and awareness, engaging with community (both the eating disorder community and the broader community), providing educational opportunities for those who wish to learn more about eating disorders, and working to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals involved in treating eating disorders.

We build on our respective histories of working to serve people across the eating disorders continuum from prevention to treatment. Please find below a brief history of the coalitions that have merged to form the WWEDC, and visit our Who's Who page to find out more about our members.

The scope of practice for the WWEDC operates across what is now known as the Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph region. We acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional territories of the Neutral, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinaabe peoples, as well as now being home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Eating Disorders Coalition

The Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Eating Disorders Coalition was formed in 2000 after a number of community agencies working in eating disorder prevention and treatment came together to celebrate National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. The coalition was founded out of a desire to increase connections in the community; letting people know "who was doing what" in our community around eating disorders and body image. The earliest work of the coalition involved building on existing connections by creating a directory of relevant services for eating disorders in the Wellington-Guelph-Dufferin community. This directory continues to grow as more services become available and treatment options shift and expand. We are continually looking to stay up to date on what is going on in the community.

Eating Disorders Awareness Coalition

The Eating Disorders Awareness Coalition was a volunteer driven charity committed to improving the lives of people affected by eating disorders, weight preoccupation and size prejudice through delivering education and prevention programs, building a supportive community and providing referrals to treatment and resources. Founded in 1995, the coalition worked passionately to promote community awareness, prevention and wellness, education and support, professional development, and leadership. Unfortunately, the coalition dissolved in 2010. Some members moved on to act as an advisory council for the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo-Wellington eating disorder program until merging with the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Coalition in 2015.
